We all know those soft foam cases; they'll protect the lenses, but the drawback is they get a pen tip or snagged on something sharp, and they're toast.
Hard cases? Really? You want something double to triple the width of your glasses shoved in your purse, pocket, or taking up an entire drink holder in your car?
Hide and Drink's been coming up with some pretty unique takes on things lately, and this leather fold sunglass case is absolutely choice.
Leather is going to hold up, period. Everyone knows this. H&D's leather has been nicely treated and (at six months use) hasn't stained clothing or pockets from sitting inside them for hours or days, particularly in the case of inner jacket pockets.
A little more on that inner jacket pocket: its the single best place these can sit. Be it a three-piece suit or a nice fall jacket, this case is slim enough that it blends perfectly with the lay of the jacket--it won't bulge or poke you as you move around. Even the metal catch on the front is short enough to create little to no problem in a pocket.
Although there's no lining other than the leather itself inside, this can easily be boosted to continue protecting the lenses with a lint-free glasses cloth, and offers plenty of room to do so without sacrificing its slim nature.
Your sunglass (or eyeglass) arms fold around the first layer, and the flap overlays onto the metal catch to offer the arms good protection. Only the earpieces remain exposed, and the catch offers enough vertical to be the surface that keeps them off the ground first should they land on that side.
It is colored as pictured in the listing, a sort of chocolate bar brown, lighter colored on the inside.
The company logo is fairly promient on the inner flap, but is classily covered with the outer flap, something those like myself who don't enjoy being billboards for companies.
This case has survived and remained perfect as the day they were bought six months ago, traveling across the UK and Ireland, handling frequent sudden rain like a champ tucked in a pocket or jacket. Daily use makes it easy to keep in a car, easily fitting into vertical cell phone slots and can be manipulated on a lap with one hand to get the glasses out on a sudden bright drive with no issue. Pull up, grab the arms where they cross, slide out, flick them open, bam, done. Returning or swapping out pairs is just as easy--the leather offers enough tactile grip as leather on your lap to slip the frames back in and quickly close the slat around the bearing to close them.
Be aware that chonky lenses with thicker frames may cause some bulge in the case, and those with thick arms may only add to that. But for your average slim pair of eyewear will look and feel amazing in this when stored.
